Who is this Martha? Martha is Martha of Bethany, sister of Mary and Lazarus. In Luke’s Gospel (10:38-42), she shows Jesus hospitality, and in John’s Gospel (11:17-27), she is among the first to confess Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God. Martha is St. Martha’s Episcopal Church, a community of people who are committed to living out our relationship with Jesus by being welcoming and inclusive of all, and to living the Gospel in service to the world. What Would Martha Do? St. Martha’s confesses Jesus as the Messiah in worship: Holy Eucharist Sunday morning with joyful music and challenging preaching; prayer and healing Wednesday nights at St. Agnes’ House; and special worship services throughout the year. What Would Martha Do? St. Martha’s does the work of Christ in the world by offering ourselves to those in need: food through God’s Pantry and School Kids’ Backpacks; shelter through Habitat for Humanity and St. Agnes House; healing through Family Health Ministries, Mission Lexington, and Family Counseling Center; and sustainable development through Kiva Microloans, the Mama Ada Foundation, and Episcopal Relief and Development. What Would Martha Do? St. Martha’s offers the hospitality of Christ by inviting all people into our church community, and celebrating the diverse ways that God has created us. We particularly welcome those who may have felt excluded from the love of the Church because of their sexuality, gender identity, or life history. What Would Martha Do? St. Martha’s celebrates the presence of the Spirit among us when we eat, drink, sing and play at parties, potlucks, concerts, and all sorts of special events. |
